Celtics Vs. Spurs Game Recap: We finally fucking beat the Spurs

So last night in an entertaining game between two very fundamentally sound basketball teams, the Celtics beat the Spurs of San Antonio. FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2011. Let me repeat that for the ones in the back. 2011!!! Do you know how long ago that is? The last time the Celtics beat the Spurs, Pierce was holding down the the SF position for the Celtics. KG was still cussing out Tim Duncan and Prime Rondo was still a thing (remember that? that was awesome; Chris Farley Tommy Boy.gif) Needless to say its been a while since the Celtics have beaten the Spurs and boy was it a good one.

-Lets starts off with Kyrie Irving. His jersey was fully untucked tonight. The man was scoring, passing dimes (6 of them), and most surprisingly to NBA fans, playing DEFENSE. A lot of people compared him to Isaiah (guilty myself) when it came to defense, when the original trade went through; A liability. Well tonight he showed he is far from that. Apparently, getting out of Cleveland was really something Kyrie needed. I wouldn’t say he looks like he is a completely different player with the Celtics, as he still tends to go ISO heavy sometimes. However, Commander Stevens really seems to be bringing the best out of him. He was visibly giving as much effort as he could out there and staying with his man. He even ended up with a couple of decent steals, leading to some quick fast break points. Oh, and along with that he still managed to put up 24 points on 10/16 shooting while playing basically only 3 quarters. He was in full Uncle Drew mode.

– Along with Kyrie having a great night, in what some might call an arrival game for Irving, the young guys continued to play solid. Jaylen ended the night with 18 points on 6/11 shooting and some sound defense. He did have some questionable shots, but overall it was another good night for the sophomore, all while going 5/5 from the stripe where he had been struggling this season.

– Tatum didn’t exactly light it up scoring tonight, but was still manage to rip down 11 rebounds which is awesome. Rebounding was a huge problem for the Celtics the past couple of years and with that kind of effort from a rookie, who can play multiple positions, it really helps solve the problem for now and the foreseeable future. Jay was still able to show off his stroke going 2/4 from three and ending with 7 points. Not an awful night for the rook at all.

– Along with the much talked about young guys, one of the more under the radar guys to the casual fan had a nice game for himself and that was Semi Ojeleye. Again, like Tatum he didn’t light it up offensively, but he managed to hit a corner three, which he has been struggling with since he got in the league and also hit some timely free throws. Semi was also making the hustle plays that Stevens loves and gets guys playing time on the Celtics (ex. Marcus Smart). Just like Marcus Smart, Ojeleye continued to show that he can defend in the league. He has good footwork and is all around just a fucking tank. I mean look at this guy.

– I can’t believe I have made it this far without saying anything about Terry Rozier. Yes, he did indeed have a rough start with his shooting and continued to struggle at the rim as we have seen far too often, but he showed a short glimpse late in the game where he took over. He put up 10 points of his 12 in just a few minutes with 2 threes and a couple of nice finishes. During this stretch he showed that he has vastly improved his jumpshot and confidence in taking it since coming into the league, which is huge for the Celtics second unit. Was good to see Scary Terry in full effect for a while.

– Al Horford continues to light it up this year. He ended the night with 14, 13 rebounds, and 5 assists. You can see how much more fluid the offense is when he is out there. He is such a good passer as a big man and fits the Celtics system so well. Al often gets a lot of flack because he is not known as physical big man, but the guy has been playing good defense and rebounding this year, better than we have ever before seen in his stint with the Celtics. So here’s to Big Al keeping that up and being the Horford he can fully be.

-I think I have come to grips that Marcus Smart is just never going to be a consistent shooter and I am totally fine with that. Its just not his game. He gets open looks and they just don’t fall. I know he will get hot occasionally, but to be honest I have no problem with him not being a good shooter. If he can shoot 30% from three for the rest of his career I will be fine with that. He affects the games in many other ways. It is what it is.

-Overall it was a good all around team win for the Celtics. Baynes continued to look good, Theis showed some flashes, and the bench warmers even got some time. I know, I know, the Spurs didn’t have Kawhi, Parker, or Ginobli, but its still the Spurs. They are good no matter who they trot out there thanks to in large to Pop. BUT the Celtics are also without Hayward for the year 😥 , so we will call it even. Anyways, lets keep the 5 game win streak up and beat the Kings on Wednesday. That’s all for now. Bring in the dancing lobsters.
